Germany marked the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Saturday, a pivotal moment in the collapse of communism in Europe.

Germany marked 35th anniversary of fall of Berlin Wall on Saturday, a pivotal moment in collapse of communism in Europe.

At Berlin Wall Memorial a commemoration was held, attended by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Governing Mayor of Berlin Kai Wegner was among those who spoke at commemoration, describing fall of Berlin Wall by people of former GDR (German Democratic Republic or East Germany) as "incredible moments."

Wegner also me reference to people of world "who do t live in freedom and democracy" and said he wanted Berlin "to be a place of hope" for m.

After short event, Steinmeier and ors placed flowers into cracks in wall.

Built in 1961, Wall stood for 28 years at front line of Cold War between Americans and Soviets.

It was built by communist regime to cut off East Germans from supposed ideological contamination of West and to stem tide of people fleeing East Germany.

Today, only a few stretches of 156.4 kilometer (97.2 mile) barrier remain, mostly as a tourist attraction.
