Gulalai Ismail: The new face of anti-Pakistan protest in New York

Gulalai Ismail, escaped authorities last month and reached New York to seek political asylum in the US, has been voicing the atrocities faced by the minorities.

Pakistani human rights activist from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gulalai Ismail has become  new face of hope for oppressed mirities in Pakistan. Gulalai Ismail, who h escaped authorities last month and reached United States to seek political asylum, has been highlighting  atrocities faced by mirity communities of Pakistan on global platforms as well in streets of New York. She along with Muhajirs, Pashtuns, Balochis, Sindhis, and or mirities protested outside United Nations hequarters. protestors voiced ir concern when Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan was dressing General Assembly.

Opposing human rights violations by Pakistan's military

"Incent Pashtuns were killed in Pakistan in name of ericating terrorism. Thousands of people are jailed in internment centres and torture cells of Pakistani Army," said Ismail during protest.

She has vehemently opposed human rights violations in Pakistan by ir military. When Imran Khan was in a conversation with Josette Sheeran, president of Asia Society on peace and stability in South Asia, Gulalai Ismail requested people to ask Pakistan’s Prime Minister about human rights situation in country with hashtag #AsiaSocietyLive.

'Only speak langu of violence'

Gulalai said that Pakistan is becoming a state where institutes only speak langu of violence. “ matter if people are protesting for ir right to life, speech or right to jobs y are faced with violence from state institutions,” she tweeted. Ismail has been demanding Pakistani military to end ir human rights violations, explicitly mentioning dictatorship in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. "Our demand is to end human rights violations by Pakistani military immediately. y should release people who are still locked up in torture cells,” said Gulalai Ismail.

"But we are accused of terrorism if we raise our voices against m. re's a dictatorship in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province by Pakistani military establishment."

Worried about family and friends

Ismail is also worried about her family back home and fears for life of friends who helped her escape from Pakistan. Gulalai Ismail, chairperson of Aware Girls, a n-governmental organisation, is a recipient of International Humanist of Year Award from International Humanist and Ethical Union. She co-founded NGO Aware Girls in 2002 with her sister Saba Ismail.

Last vember, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) h recommended putting Gulalai Ismail’s name on Exit Control List (ECL). Later, High Court ordered removal of her name from ECL after Ismail challenged government’s decision. However, court h allowed government to take appropriate action including confiscation of her passport.
