New Delhi: As the diplomatic rift between India and Canada deepened, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who reclaimed power after a decade of Conservative rule, now facing perhaps the greatest crisis of his leadership. After nearly nine years in office, his once-bright image has faded, particularly due to his perceived support for Khalistani terrorists. Mounting criticism of his policies, crisis management, and overall effectiveness has further eroded public confidence in his leadership. Moreover, as pressure builds from within his own party and from an increasingly dissatisfied electorate, Trudeau’s political record is being scrutinized like never before.
Of late, some members of Trudeau’s Liberal Party have urged him not to seek a fourth term, presenting a major challenge to his political career. After a three-hour meeting with Liberal MPs, a smiling Trudeau stated that the party remained "strong and united." However, three Liberals disclosed that they were among more than 20 MPs who had signed a letter requesting Trudeau to step down before the next election. The letter has not been made public. The Liberals currently hold 153 seats in Canada’s House of Commons.
How Trudeau Lost His Grip
Trudeau, who revived the Liberals in 2015 by channeling the charisma of his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, is now facing big challenges. Canadians, frustrated by rising costs in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, are increasingly dissatisfied with his leadership. The latest Nanos poll shows the Liberals trailing the opposition Conservatives by 38% to 25%, with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
Trudeau's Claims Fall Apart: No Hard Evidence in Nijjar Case
In a significant embarrassment for both himself and the Canadian government, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged that his allegations against the Indian government over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a terrorist wanted in India—were based solely on intelligence reports, without any "hard evidentiary proof." While testifying before the foreign interference inquiry, Trudeau admitted that Canada had only shared intelligence inputs with India, lacking concrete evidence to support the accusations.
Earlier in the week, Trudeau had escalated tensions by labelling India’s envoy to Canada as a “person of interest” in the case, triggering a diplomatic standoff. This move resulted in India recalling its ambassador from Ottawa and expelling six senior Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.
What Trudeau Had Lied Earlier?
Issuing a statement earlier, the Prime Minister said, “The evidence brought to light by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) cannot be ignored. It leads to one conclusion: it is necessary to disrupt the criminal activities that continue to pose a threat to public safety in Canada. That is why we acted. Because we will always – first and foremost – stand for the right of Canadians to feel safe and secure in their own country.”
Trudeau: A Leader in Decline
Trudeau had promised Canadians a different kind of leadership, contrasting his vision of openness and transparency with the decade-long Conservative government led by Stephen Harper. But nine years later, many of his promises have either fallen short or been overshadowed by scandals, political missteps, and a faltering economy. Trudeau’s leadership, which once resonated with youth, minorities, and urban progressives, now faces declining support due to a range of factors.
Rising Cost of Living and Economic Struggles
One of the big challenges plaguing Trudeau's record is the rising cost of living, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing prices have soared, inflation has surged, and many Canadians find themselves struggling to make ends meet. While global economic conditions certainly play a role, the Trudeau government’s inability to effectively address these issues has triggered frustration among Canadians.
Canada’s once-booming middle class is feeling squeezed, and the government’s response—while well-intentioned—has been criticized as insufficient or too slow. Policies like the Canada Child Benefit and support for affordable housing have been praised, but they have not kept pace with the economic realities facing millions of Canadians.
Trudeau's Scandals and Ethical Lapses
Trudeau’s leadership has been further tainted by a series of scandals that have called into question his judgment and ethics. The most notable was the SNC-Lavalin affair in 2019, where Trudeau faced allegations of political interference in a criminal prosecution involving the Quebec-based engineering firm. The scandal led to the resignation of key ministers and severely damaged his credibility as a champion of transparency.
In addition, Trudeau was criticised for taking a family vacation on the private island of the Aga Khan, which led to a conflict-of-interest investigation. These ethical lapses have tarnished his once-pristine image and reinforced the perception that his government operates under a “rules for thee, not for me” mentality.
Indigenous Reconciliation: Progress or Promises Unfulfilled?
One of Trudeau’s signature pledges was to improve relations with Canada’s Indigenous peoples. His government made some notable advances, such as the creation of a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and the implementation of some recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
However, critics argue that progress has been too slow. Boil water advisories in many Indigenous communities continue despite promises to resolve them. The failure to improve living conditions for Indigenous people has left many feeling disillusioned with Trudeau’s government. Moreover, his handling of pipeline projects like the Trans Mountain expansion, which faced opposition from Indigenous groups, has further strained his relationship with First Nations communities.
Climate Change: Ambition vs. Action
Trudeau has been vocal about his commitment to fighting climate change, positioning himself as a global leader on the issue. His government introduced a national carbon tax, which was hailed as a landmark policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, critics argue that his actions have not matched his rhetoric.
While Trudeau's government pushed forward with the carbon tax, it also purchased the Trans Mountain pipeline, a move that environmentalists saw as contradictory to his climate goals. The expansion of oil pipelines under his leadership has raised questions about the sincerity of his commitment to the environment, leading some to label him as a “climate hypocrite.”
Political Instability and Internal Dissent
The recent surge in internal dissent from members of his own Liberal Party suggests that Trudeau’s leadership is more precarious than ever. Several lawmakers, frustrated by the party’s poor polling numbers and Trudeau’s handling of key issues, have publicly expressed concerns about his ability to lead them into the next election. A letter signed by more than 20 Liberal MPs calling for Trudeau to step down has further fueled speculation about his future.
With the Liberals trailing the opposition Conservatives by a significant margin, Trudeau’s political future is in doubt. His government’s reliance on minority support in Parliament has also created instability. The recent loss of key ridings in special elections has only amplified calls for change at the top.
Legacy: The Fall from Grace
Justin Trudeau’s legacy is complex. He entered office as a symbol of progressive leadership, inheriting the political star power of his father, Pierre Trudeau, one of Canada’s most iconic prime ministers. He championed diversity, legalized cannabis, expanded immigration, and promoted gender equality within his Cabinet. But over time, his leadership has been marred by contradictions, ethical failures, and an inability to address pressing economic concerns.
As he faces the prospect of a fourth term, Trudeau’s dismal record stands as a cautionary tale for leaders who rise quickly but struggle to sustain their momentum. Once the darling of global progressives, he now faces a deeply sceptical electorate, an emboldened opposition, and internal fractures within his own party.
