Hong Kong reports surge in coronavirus cases weeks after being praised for mature handling

Hong Kong was handling its coronavirus crisis very well until a week ago as the number of cases in the region was comparatively lower than other cities.

Hong Kong until a week ago was receiving appreciation from global community for its handling of coronavirus outbreak. However, t everything in busiest city in world is okay after it reported a record surge in number of coronavirus cases in region. According to reports, number of cases in region has doubled in just a week which has caused major concern among health authorities around globe.

Hong Kong h recorded just 150 coronavirus cases in last three months despite being so close to hotspot. But in just last week number of cases in semi-automous Chinese region has surpassed 300 mark, which is more than 100 per cent rise in seven days. As per reports, experts are blaming sudden influx of foreign returnees after lockdown measures imposed by most countries around world.

Media reports also suggest that or reason behind surge in cases could be return of public and private sector workers to work after several weeks of quarantine. More than 1,80,000 people reportedly returned to work from March 2, flooding public transport and or places after restrictions were eased in region looking at just 100 cases that h been reported till n.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on March 23 anunced that all n-residents will be barred from entering territory as of March 25, latest dition to measures taken to prevent spre of virus. Many countries have anunced similar measures for two months, banning public garings, closing down schools and colleges and shutting down international borders.

Coronavirus outbreak

COVID-19 has claimed more than 14,600 lives across world and has infected nearly 3,38,000 people globally since it first broke out in December 2019. China is most affected country in world as experts believe that virus originated from a seafood market in Wuhan city, epicentre of disease, where animals were reportedly being tred illegally.  

Italy, Iran, and Spain are most affected countries outside mainland China, where, as of March 22 combined death toll stands at 8,933. Italy has surpassed China to record most number of deaths in world due to virus outbreak, while Iran and Spain both have crossed 1,500 mark.
