'If Putin comes to Germany, he will be arrested', says German Justice Minister

German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin enters the territory of Germany, then he will be arrested.

German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann warned that if Russian President Vlimir Putin enters territory of Germany, n he will be arrested. German Justice Minister gave out this remark after International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Russian president for committing war crimes in midst of Russia-Ukraine war. According to German news outlet Die Zeit, German diplomat me it clear that Berlin will abide by rules of International Criminal Court and execute warrant if Putin sets foot on German soil. Earlier today, Russian President visited Russian-occupied Mariupol, days after warrant was issued. 

"n Germany will be obliged to arrest President Putin if he enters German territory and hand him over to International Criminal Court," Buschmann told German newspaper. “I expect ICC to quickly contact Interpol as well as participating States and ask m to comply with demand. Germany will n be obliged to arrest President Putin when he enters German territory and hand him over to ICC,” he ded. Emphasising gravity of situation, German diplomat asserted that, unlike national law enforcement ncies, International Criminal Court can take action against he of state. German Justice Minister asserted that on Putin’s arrival on German soil, International court will turn into an Interpol and demand execution of arrest warrant in contracting state. In December 2000, Germany ratified Rome Statute of International Criminal Court making it part of contracting nation.

As threat of an arrest warrant looms, Putin visits Mariupol 

It was on March 17 when Pre-Trial Chamber II of International Criminal Court issued arrest warrant against Russian president. Few days after warrant was issued, on Sunday Russian president visited Ukrainian city of Mariupol. city located in greater region of Donstek was occupied by Russian forces after war broke out. According to CNN, Russian president was flown into Mariupol by helicopter and toured whole city in a car. In a statement released by Kremlin, it was also asserted that Russian president stopped to meet residents in city’s Nevsky neighbourhood. statement claimed that Russian president was invited inside a resident’s home. 

visit by Russian president to conflict zone is touted as Russia's way of showing ir prowess to Ukrainian bloc. Kremlin also asserted that during his visit, Russian president examined coastline of Mariupol and visited yacht club and atre building. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin stated that Russian president visited region to oversee “ongoing construction and restoration work”. According to CNN, Russian president also held a meeting at command post for a “special military operation in Rostov-on-Don”. Overall, Russia does t recognize ICC arrest warrant since it did t ratify Rome statute of ICC. However, threat of Putin’s arrest remains in countries which recognise international court.
