The Indian Embassy in France on Sunday paid homage to Indian soldiers who fought in the First World War and made the supreme sacrifice. The commemorative ceremony was held at Villers Guislain Indian War Memorial which is just 200 km away from Paris. The Villers Guislain Indian War memorial was unveiled on November 10 last year to honour the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in the First World War.

The Indian Embassy in France tweeted pictures of the ceremony held by India and France to pay homage to the Indian soldiers. India's ambassador to France, Vinay Kwatra on October 3 tweeted that France will be hosting a multi-agency Indian delegation to counter-terror ties together. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the National Investigation Agency were part of the delegation that visited France from October 1 to October 4. Indian Naval Ship INS Tarkash along with its 300 member crew also visited the Reunion Island in France. On Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, France also released a special commemorative stamp to honour Mahatma Gandhi.

The Indian War Memorial in France
The Indian War Memorial in France was unveiled by India's Vice President Venkiah Naidu on November 10 in 2018 at Villers Guislain. The memorial which features the Ashoka emblem is the first-ever national memorial for Indian soldiers who died in France during the First World War. The memorial was constructed by the Government of India through the USI. During the first World War, India contributed more than 1 million troops, out of which, 62,000 troops died overseas and approximately 67,000 Indian soldiers were wounded.
