As three people received the Nobel Prize on Monday, Abhijit Banerjee joins the list of Indians and people of Indian origin who have received the award

Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee on Monday won Nobel Prize for Economics, joining list of Indians and people of Indian origin to grab world's most prestigious award in different fields. Banerjee shared award with his French-American wife Esr Duflo and anor American economist Michael Kremer for ir "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty." Born in Mumbai, 58-year-old economist is currently Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at US-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He studied at University of Calcutta and Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University before receiving his PhD in 1988 from Harvard University.

List of Indians to receive Nobel Prize

Banerjee joins list of Indians and people of Indian origin who have received prestigious Nobel Prize in fields like Physics, Chemistry, Peace, Economic Sciences, and Medicine.

  • Rabindranath Tagore was first Indian to win coveted prize for Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has me his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of literature of West"

  • Mor Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun of Albanian origin and Indian citizenship who founded ' Missionaries of Charity' was awarded Peace Nobel in 1979 in recognition of her "work in bringing help to suffering humanity".
  • Indian-American Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar won 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics with William A. Fowler for "oretical studies of physical processes of importance to structure and evolution of stars."
  • Nobel for Economic Sciences in 1998 was won by Kolkata-born economist Amartya Sen "for his contributions to welfare economics."

  • India-born Venkatraman Ramakrishnan won 2009 Nobel Prize along with two ors in Chemistry "for studies of structure and function of ribosome."
  • Sixty-year-old Kailash Satyarthi shared Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 with Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai for "ir struggle against suppression of children and young people and for right of all children to education".

  • Sir Vidihar Surajpras Naipaul, who is of Indian descent, won Nobel Prize in Literature 2001 "for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see presence of suppressed histories." He was born in Trinid and later became a British citizen.

Between 1901 and 2018, award has been given 590 times to 935 laureates and organisations. Prize includes 9 million-kronor (USD 918,000) cash, a gold medal, and a diploma.
