According to reports, the Maluku islands in the eastern part of Indonesia were hit by an earthquake on September 26 that measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. The earthquake hit around 37 kilometers away from the Ambon area of the Maluku islands around 8 in the morning. There was no such indication of people getting injured, dying or even significant damage to property in an area that has been no stranger to strong bouts of earthquakes in the past.
According to preliminary findings, the earthquake was thought to be originating from somewhere offshore but a further probe that was carried into this revealed that it had actually hit the area onshore.
A person living in the Ambon area said that he was sleeping with his family when everything started shaking. He further added that all of them ran out only to see everyone running and in a state of panic.
Indonesia: No stranger to earthquakes
Indonesia is often a witness to constant seismic and volcanic actions because of its placement on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', where structural plates collide with each other.
In August 2019, a lot of people were injured when a strong earthquake hit the heavily populated Java island in Indonesia. In 2018, an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale with a Tsunami that followed, wrecked the provincial capital, Palu, on the Sulawesi Island.
According to news agencies, in the year 2004, an earthquake with the power of a 9.1 earthquake hit off Sumatra Island in western Indonesia killing 220000 people.
An effort to save lives
Meanwhile, experts have discovered that information accumulated from satellites can progressively give a data report on the effect of earthquakes of a bigger magnitude, which can in turn help give a much better and an effective crisis reaction. The pictures provided by the satellites will precise information about where the tremors happened and how enormous the destruction was and where the seismic tremors happened in respect to a populated area, all inside the time frame of 2 or 3 days.
