Iran's Rouhani says Trump's exit from nuclear deal was 'stupid mistake'

Iran President Hassan Rohani has said on May 6 that US President Donald Trump’s decision of exiting the nuclear accord of 2015 was a “stupid mistake”.

In latest development in US-Iran tensions, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said on May 6 that US President Donald Trump’s decision to exit  nuclear accord of 2015 was a “stupid mistake”. According to reports, Rouhani called on Washington to lift sanctions from Tehran amid dely coronavirus outbreak as a condition to let country back in nuclear deal that was exited by Trump in May 2018. Since that move, White House has imposed sanctions on Iran that are severely taking a toll on latter's ecomy.

However, Iranian President also warned of a “crushing response” if arms embargo imposed on Islamic Republic by US is extended. United States renewed existing sanctions on Iran on March 30 for 60 ditional days while permitting Russian, European, and Chinese firms to continue ir work on Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear facilities without American penalities. While world has been tackling coronavirus outbreak, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed off on waiver extensions but decided to continue to impose restrictions on Tehran.

Iran balancing sanctions, pandemic

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani defended his government’s action to combat unprecedented outbreak of dely coronavirus while also dealing with a crippled ecomy. According to reports, as thousands have died in Iran due to COVID-19 infection, Rouhani said that it was “t a time for political war”. While heavy sanctions imposed by United States have taken a toll on Iran’s ecomy, Rouhani called health as country’s principle along with security of society.

global death toll of coronavirus outbreak continues to spike, it has also increased challenges that leers across world face of striking a balance between imposing harsh measures to stem spre of COVID-19 but also maintain ecomy. From stimulus packs to major cities under lockdown, pandemic has forced countries to take necessary steps but Hassan Rouhani has said that it is “t time to gar followers”. Iran has emerged as one of world’s hardest-hit countries from coronavirus and has reported at least 99,970 cases and 6,340 deaths.
