Iran internet services restored after shutdown over protest

Iran restores internet services in the capital city and many parts of the provinces after a week-long violent protest on fuel hike

Internet services were restored in capital city of Iran and some or parts of province on Thursday after week-long violent protests and unrest following increase in price of fuel. Amnesty International on Tuesday reported at least 106 people have died owing to  widespre protest triggered by fuel price hike. According to a state news ncy, internet services were grually being restored in country. National Security Council has ordered to reactivate internet in some areas and as per reports fixed-line internet has been restored in Hormozgan, Kermanshah, Arak, Mashh, Qom, Tabriz, Haman and Bushehr provinces, and parts of Tehran.

Owing to shutdown of internet services, protesters could t post videos on social media to generate more support and also to obtain reliable reports on extent of unrest. unrest reportedly erupted on Friday after authorities anunced that price of petrol would rise to 15,000 rials per litre from 10,000 for first 60 litres, and to 30,000 rials for any extra fuel brought after that each month. Since n, protesters have reportedly abandoned ir cars and joined mass demonstrations in Tehran and elsewhere. authorities have also shut down internet across Iran to smor protests in cities and towns.

US expressed support for Iranian people

United States has also deunced use of force and virtual communications blackout. In a statement released by White House on vember 17, US expressed support for Iranian people in ir peaceful protests. "We condemn lethal force and severe communication restrictions used against demonstrators," statement re. Amid ongoing anti-government-protests Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that nation would t allow 'insecurity'. Rouhani furr defended controversial petrol price hike and reportedly said that insecurity should t be allowed in society.
