Iran's top diplomat Mohamm Jav Zarif told his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in a phone call that Tehran is opposed to military action in Syria, foreign ministry has said. "Zarif voiced opposition to military action" and "urged respect for Syria's territorial integrity and national sovereignty," Zarif was quoted as saying in a statement issued late October 7.

Iranian foreign minister also "stressed need for fight against terrorism and for establishment of stability and security in Syria".

Turkey was poised

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Turkey was poised to launch a military operation against Kurdish forces in rrn Syria, after US President Donald Trump gave him green light. Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from region has faced strong criticism in US, including from his own allies who have accused him of turning his back on Kurds who took heavy casualties in US-backed campaign against Islamic State (IS) group in Syria.

In ir phone call, Zarif told Cavusoglu that ana agreement was " best approach for Syria and Turkey and for dressing ir concerns".

Ankara and Damascus signed agreement in 1998 to ease tensions after Turkey threatened Syria with military action if it did t expel Turkish-Kurdish rebel leer Abdallah Ocalan from its soil. For his part, Cavusoglu said Turkish military operation in rastern Syria "would be temporary", according to statement from Iranian foreign ministry. Erdogan has expressed Ankara's determination to clear Syrian border area east of Euphrates river of Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). Turkey says YPG is a "terrorist offshoot" of Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). United States worked closely with YPG to recapture swas of territory from IS.
