Iran reports 135 new coronavirus deaths, total increases to 988

Iran on March 17 reported 135 deaths from the novel coronavirus taking the total death toll in the country to 988. The total number of active cases is 16,169.

Iran on March 17 reported 135 deaths from vel coronavirus taking total death toll in country to 988. According to Kiaush Jahanpour, a Health Ministry spokesman, who confirmed report on a live televised program, recent death toll represented a rapid rise in deaths from day before. Iran is second most affected country after Italy, where at least 16,000 people have been infected by dely virus so far.

As per reports, a recently elected Member of Parliament in Iran died of disease on March 7. Fatemeh Rahbar, 55, was a conservative MP from capital Tehran and was one of seven politicians to died from virus. 23 or members of parliament in country h tested positive for virus. Mohamm Mirmohammi, an viser to Iran's Supreme Leer Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was first senior official to die from virus on March 2.

Iran has been criticised for its handling of virus outbreak for which it blames United States. According to media reports, Iran is suffering from a lack of resources because of ongoing ecomic sanctions imposed by United States. Iran h earlier requested International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a loan to tackle outbreak in country.
