Iran's top nuclear scientist assassinated, Army Chief vows 'severe revenge'

Iran's armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri has vowed to take revenge against the perpetrators behind the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

Iran's armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohamm Bagheri has vowed to take revenge against perpetrators behind assassination of country's top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizeh. Bagheri warned of "severe revenge" against those behind killing on Friday. "Terrorist groups and leers and perpetrators of this cowardly attempt should kw that severe revenge awaits m," Bagheri wrote in a tweet, as reported by Iranian news ncy IRNA.

Mohsen Fakhrizeh, who is regarded as architect of Iran's nuclear programme, was killed on vember 27 in Absard, a vill on outskirts of capital Tehran that Iranian elites use as a retreat. Fakhrizeh was reportedly attacked by at least five gunmen after his sedan stopped due to an explosion that occurred a few minutes ago near his car. Fakhrizeh was taken to hospital but doctors couldn't revive him as he was alrey brought de.

Iran blames Israel

Iranian Foreign Minister Jav Zarif has blamed Israel for killing as he called on international community, especially European Union for ir "shameful double standards" in t condemning act of "state terror". This is t first time that Tehran has accused Tel Aviv of carrying out an assassination in Islamic Republic as in 2010 Iran h blamed Israel for killing ar nuclear scientist Majid Shahriari.

According to reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2018 h mentioned Fakhrizahed's name publicly, and said, "remember that name". Israel and United States have been long tried to thwart Iranian nuclear programme fearing threat to security in region. 

outgoing US President Donald Trump retweeted a post by an Israeli journalist Yossi Melman, who informed about Fakhrizahed's killing on micro-blogging site and wrote, "His death is a major psychological and professional blow for Iran". assassination took place months after Iran and United States were on brink of war over killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Baghd by US forces.
