In the wake of an intense missile barrage from Iran, several of Israel’s key allies have confirmed their involvement in helping to fend off the attack.
On Tuesday night, more than 180 missiles were launched by Iran, with most intercepted before causing significant damage, Israeli authorities said. The barrage marked a significant escalation in tensions.
A look at Biden's statement
U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed that the United States military was directly involved in defending Israel, with American naval forces stationed in the eastern Mediterranean playing a key role. “Make no mistake, the United States is fully, fully, fully supportive of Israel,” Biden told reporters, noting the extensive collaboration between the two countries ahead of the attack.
Biden explained that U.S. forces had acted “at my direction,” actively assisting in shooting down incoming missiles. He praised the coordination between U.S. and Israeli defense officials, who had anticipated such an event.
US wasn't alone
Other nations quickly followed the U.S. in expressing their support. According to a report from the New York Times, on Tuesday evening, British Defense Minister John Healy acknowledged that British forces had been involved in the defensive efforts. “The U.K. stands fully behind Israel’s right to defend its country and its people against threats," Healy said, commending the courage and professionalism of British personnel involved in the operation.
While the British Ministry of Defense declined to disclose specific details regarding its role, the statement emphasized that the U.K. had acted to prevent further escalation in the region.
France also confirmed its involvement, with President Emmanuel Macron convening an overnight defense and security meeting. In a statement on Wednesday, the French government announced that it had “mobilized its military resources” in the Middle East to support Israel’s defensive efforts. While France condemned Iran’s missile attack, Macron also called for Israel to end its military operations in Lebanon, citing concern over civilian casualties.
A look at Iran's stance
Meanwhile, Iran has issued a stern warning to any foreign nations assisting Israel. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi cautioned that third-party nations involved in supporting Israel would face consequences. "Any third party supporting Israel would face a strong response," Iranian state media reported on Wednesday.
As the situation unfolds, global powers are closely watching the developments, hoping to prevent a larger conflict in the already volatile region.
