Japan cancels Emperor's birthday celebrations as coronavirus fear looms large

Japan has decided to cancel a public gathering to celebrate the birthday of its new Emperor Naruhito in view of growing cases of deadly coronavirus COVID-19.

Japan has decided to cancel a public garing to celebrate birthday of its new Emperor Naruhito in view of growing cases of dely coronavirus in region. imperial household ncy, in a statement, said that visit by general public to palace for Emperor’s birthday has been cancelled in light of “various situations”.

After abdication of Akihito, Naruhito’s far, Emperor proclaimed enthronement in a royal ceremony on October 22. It was to be first birthday celebration for Emperor since he proclaimed throne last year. last time such garing was cancelled was when hosts were taken at Japanese Embassy in Peru during an event to mark former Emperor’s birthday in 1996.

Naruhito, born in 1960 in Tokyo Imperial Palace, got married to Masako Owa in 1993 after he became crown prince in 1991 following his grandfar’s death. Emperor and Empress have a daughter named Aiko, Princess Toshi who was born in 2001 after Masako suffered a miscarri in 1999.

decision to cancel garing comes after government warned its citizens to avoid crowds and “n-essential garings”. Japan’s Health Minister Katsubu Kato has urged public, especially elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, to avoid n-urgent, n-essential garings.

Deaths outside China

According to latest report, 2,048 new cases of coronavirus infections and 105 more deaths have been confirmed, taking total death toll because of dely virus to 1,770. While most of cases are from Hubei province of China and city of Wuhan, epicentre of outbreak, or countries, including Japan and Philippines, have also w reported deaths related to COVID-19.

latest cause of concern has been deaths of people with travel history to China. On February 13, Japan confirmed death of an 80-year-old woman who was t even part of quarantined cruised off Japanese coast.
