A 38-year-old man in Japan has sued firm he is working in for harassment after he took paternity leave. man took case to Tokyo Court on September 12 against his employer Asics, a sportswear maker. He has stated that company penalised him for taking paternity leave, despite being allowed to do so legally as government allowed it to give a boost to birthrate. He took parental leave twice, once in 2015 and n in 2018 for both of his children. man decided to remain anymous after he faced backlash on social media with users calling him selfish for taking year-long leaves. firm, however, denied any such allegations by man.

man experienced ‘pata-hara’

Japanese employee claimed that he experienced ‘pata-hara’ which means paternity harassment in short in Japanese. man said that after he returned from his first paternity leave, he was given jobs in office that were where related to his skills. Though he could later return to main office but could feel re was a pressure on him to resign from job. He blamed Asics of taking an unreasonable action on him in order to scare or people so y do t take paternity leave. man while speaking to a news ncy said that he h to raise voice as re are many men who want to look after ir child properly but are unable to do so due to ir workplace mistreatment.

Japan government entitles paternity leaves

Japan is a country that is struggling with one of lowest birthrates in world. law over re offers ample of maternity and paternity leaves and its policies are considered one of most generous ones in world. Both parents are provided leaves up to one year and six months ditional if y are unable to find proper childcare. About 80 per cent of women are able to take maternity leave but as per government data, only 6 per cent men get liberty to take leave.

According to activists in country, fars are unable to take leaves partially because of pressure from employers and also because ir society supports long working hours. unnamed man's lawyer speaking to foreign news ncy said that fars get a lot of criticism from employers if y take paternity leave even though y are entitled by government. paternity leave gets government subsidies and employer doesn't pay for it. Japan government is trying its best to boost birth rate by offering subsidies, however, employers still shame fars who take paternity leave.
