Japan's chief cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told a regular news conference Tuesday that "We cannot overlook malicious cyberattacks that could shake the foundation of democracy." after British allegations of a Russian cyber-attack plot targeting the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Kato declined to comment on details of specific cases, and added that "Tokyo Olympic is an international event that is capturing global attention and that we are well aware of the importance of cybersecurity measures." He said the government has been promoting risk management by event operators, establishment and operation of a cybersecurity response coordination center to serve as a command center for information sharing.
