Kenya’s only female white giraffe, one of the world’s rarest, and her calf have been found dead at a wildlife sanctuary in Ijara, confirmed conservationists.

Kenya’s only female white giraffe, one of world’s rarest, and her calf have been found de at a wildlife sanctuary in Ijara, Garissa County, confirmed Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy. conservationist group, in a statement, said that death was confirmed on March 10 by community members and ir rangers.
conservancy stated that giraffe was in a skeletal state after being killed by armed poachers. calf was second birth which was reported in August 2019 which resulted in a family of three white giraffes but only lone bull remains after death.

“This is a very s day for community of Ijara and Kenya as a whole. We are only community in world who are custodians of white giraffe,” said Mohammed Ahmedor, manr of Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy.
“Its killing is a blow to tremendous steps taken by community to conserve rare and unique species, and a wakeup call for continued support to conservation efforts," Ahmedor ded.

Kenya’s white giraffe, with its unique hide, grabbed helines in 2017 but it is important to te that it was white because of condition kwn as leucism and is t albi. giraffe, endemic to Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy, h white colour due to leucism due to which it continues to produce dark pigment in ir soft tissue. Due to rare condition, her eyes were still dark in colour.

'Long term loss'
Unlike leucism, albinism is a condition in which re is an absence of melanin, giving colour to skin, fears, hair and eyes. While Leucism is a partial loss of pigmentation which can make animal have white or patchily coloured skin, hair, fears and so on, but pigment cells in eyes are t affected.

“This is a long term loss given that genetics studies and research which were significant investment into area by researchers, has w gone to drain. Furr to this, white giraffe was a big boost to tourism in area," Ahmedor expressed anguish.
