Recent studies conducted by researchers on Koalas have revealed that ancient infected DNA could have changed course of evolution. research was published in Cell, which primarily targeted Koala retrovirus also kwn as KoRV, This virus belongs to category of HIV virus and started inserting itself into Koala geme 40,000 years ago. This virus which has been passed on from one generation to ar is considered to cause a change in evolution of species.

How retrovirus les to change in evolution

Koalas have suffered from chlamydia and cancers like leukemia. While studying solutions to se problems, se studies brought scientists to ask how se viruses insert mselves into animal DNA and also can cause a change of course in evolution.  scientists have discovered that re has been a constant insertion of viruses into genes of animals. Approximately 8 percent of human gene structure consists of viruses. se viruses, however, belong to ancient viruses -some of m existing even before humans.

Retrovirus capable of activating or ancient viruses

Scientists reported in Cell that y observed Koala’s geme immune system fighting to render virus inactive after virus h established itself in Koala DNA. researchers also believe that Koala retrovirus is capable of activating or ancient viruses in DNA. se changes in gene structure of Koala can le to possibilities of mutations and variations which form new bases for natural selection.

Retrovirus becomes a permanent part of DNA

se Retroviruses are responsible for causing cancer and making immune system weak. However, if se retroviruses are inserted inside a sperm or egg, insertion becomes permanent and virus becomes part of animal DNA. Once y become endogeus and are a permanent part of inherited DNA, y cease to cause original infection. research proved that insertion of retrovirus was t just causing cancer in organism but also changing to ir geme leing to change in course of evolution.
