Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes southeast Turkey

The government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said the magnitude 5.0 quake was centered in the town of Poturge in Malatya province.

A moderate earthquake that hit souast Turkey sent people out into streets in panic Friday, but re were immediate reports of injuries or dam.

State-run Anolu ncy reported that earthquake was felt in several neighboring provinces and some people rushed out of ir homes, fearing a building collapse.

“We have t received any negative news concerning earthquake up to w,” Anolu quoted Malatya Gov. Aydin Barus as saying.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which sits atop two major fault lines. In January, a powerful earthquake centered in neighboring province of Elazig province killed 41 people, including four in Malatya.Turkey’s worst quake in deces came in 1999, when a pair of strong earthquakes struck in rthwest, killing around 18,000 people.
