Mahatma Gandhi given a tribute in SA through his favourite songs

To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, an audio-visual extravaganza was premiered at the University of Witwatersrand's Great hall on Saturday.

To mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, an audio-visual extravaganza was premiered at the University of Witwatersrand's Great hall in South Africa on Saturday to spread the message of peace through his favourite songs. It was lauded by South Africans. According to Bharghav Purohit from the music composer duo Bhargav-Kedar, "This was a deliberate strategy to appeal to the youth as we send out the universal message of peace and the values that Gandhi ji espoused, but we have found that even older people in the audience enjoyed the show." The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is on October 2. 

The Tribute Programme

The tribute programme was organized to send out a message of peace and harmony. Apart from an audio-visual programme of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite songs, an exhibition of 19 huge panels recalling highlights of Gandhi's life was organized. The exhibition also promoted Gujarat as a tourist destination. According to the curator, Varun Sutaria, who put together the programme with assistance from local events coordinator Anil Rambaran, "We are delighted with the response here in Johannesburg and are currently negotiating several global venues to take the show there."

The Dominican Republic releases Mahatma's postal stamps 

The Dominican Republic on August 28 had released a postal stamp in order to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Prime Minister during his radio broadcast show 'Mann Ki baat' had spoken about Mahatma Gandhi's 150th anniversary. Taking it to Twitter, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic stated that they are proud to release the stamps. On the other hand, the Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan thanked the External Relations Minister of Dominican Republic, Miguel Vargas for honouring Mahatma Gandhi.
