Maldivian President Muizzu Visits India, To Mend Bilateral Ties Amid Economic Crisis

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in India on Sunday for a four-day state visit aimed at revitalizing ties between the two nations, as the Maldives faces an ongoing economic crisis. This visit marks Muizzu’s first bilateral trip to India since taking office and comes at a crucial time for both countries.
President Muizzu was greeted with a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He the held a meeting with PM Modi. Later in the day, he is expected to meet with President Droupadi Murmu . The visit also includes stops in Mumbai and Agra, where Muizzu will meet with Indian officials and business leaders.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized the significance of the relationship between India and the Maldives, stating that the island nation "has always been an integral part of India’s 'Neighborhood First' policy." He highlighted that India has consistently been the first to respond to any crisis in the Maldives and is involved in both large and small development projects there.
"India has always been the first responder to any crisis in the Maldives," Misri said during a press conference. He also mentioned India’s role in "capacity building and providing funds to the country," citing the State Bank of India’s ( SBI ) rollover of two treasury bills worth over ₹100 billion.

The two nations signed several agreements during this visit, focusing on maritime security, defense cooperation, and economic development. Among these, a significant milestone was the launch of the RuPay card in the Maldives, which is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two countries. Additionally, a virtual handover of a new airport project, developed with Indian funding, and the handover of 700 household units as part of a 4,000-unit housing project were notable highlights.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who met with Muizzu for the third time, tweeted: "I am delighted to welcome President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to India. During our talks today, we discussed ways to improve economic linkages, connectivity, cultural connect and also cooperation in sectors like climate change, water resources, agriculture, fisheries, and more."
The talks also touched upon cooperation in combating drug trafficking and other regional challenges, with both countries working together on various initiatives. A vision document was signed to provide a framework for ongoing cooperation in areas like maritime security and defense.
In a gesture of goodwill, President Muizzu extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit the Maldives, which Modi graciously accepted. The dates for the visit will be finalized soon.
The outcomes of this visit are expected to mend the India-Maldives relationship, which frayed after Muizzu took office.
