Mexico: Top court strikes down state abortion law, no punishment for terminating pregnancy

The state of Coahuila was ordered by the court on Tuesday to eliminate abortion-related penalties from its penal law. Women will not be punished for abortion

Supreme Court of Mexico has decided that punishments for abortion are unlawful. Now, women in norrn state of Coahuila will not be punished if y get an abortion, according to a judgment.  state of Coahuila was ordered by court on Tuesday to eliminate abortion-related penalties from its penal law. citizens of nation believe that ruling might open path for abortion to be decriminalised throughout country. 

Abortion is now only permitted in a few places; exceptions are in case of rape or when mor's life is in jeopardy. As per BBC, a judiciary official said that  judgment would influence throughout Mexico. official furr stated that women are allowed to conduct surgery in those places where abortion is illegal but with a judge's permission.

judgment was characterised as revolutionary by Information Group on Reproductive Choice (GIRE), which works for rights of abortion. y hope that women and people who have potential to bear a child across nation have circumstances and liberty to choose ir reproductive future.

Except for four, all of country's states have strong restrictions on abortion. Before judgment, abortion was permitted in Mexico City and three or states throughout first 12 weeks of pregnancy. However, Mexican states are allowed to make ir own legislation, still, those can be nullified if y conflict with Supreme Court judgments that define law.  historical decision in Mexico comes after Argentina's historic declaration of right to an abortion at beginning of this year.

Previous developments in Mexico

Earlier, on Sunday, border security and migration authorities in Mexico's sourn town of Hiuxtla stopped a migrant caravan of US-based with around 400 asylum seekers. Border officials arrested migrants and attempted to break up group barely a day after outgoing vehicle left.  caravan's passengers were primarily Central Americans, Haitians, and Venezuelans.
