Israeli tanks have returned to the southern Gaza City of Khan Younis, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate under difficult conditions. The return of Israeli forces has intensified the conflict in the area, with Palestinian terrorists continuing to attack from the ruins, according to residents and the military.
On Friday, families fled eastern Khan Younis, carrying their belongings on donkey carts and motorcycle rickshaws or in vehicles. The roadways were heavily congested as people made their way to safer areas. Many sought refuge in Al-Mawasi, a coastal area designated as a safe zone by Israeli forces. However, some evacuees expressed concerns about its safety, given that it has been targeted in the past.
Here is what you need to know
This escalation in Khan Younis comes as leaders from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar push for a new round of talks aimed at halting the fighting. Scheduled for August 15, these talks represent a last-ditch effort to address the ongoing conflict.
In recent weeks, Israeli forces have made a series of returns to previously cleared areas in the Gaza Strip, where they had previously claimed to have driven Hamas fighters out. The military has been dropping leaflets instructing residents and those displaced by the fighting to evacuate from eastern Khan Younis, which has seen repeated waves of conflict.
“God knows, we are walking now. They said to go to humanitarian areas, but there is no safe place here in Gaza. It is all destroyed and damaged,” said a displaced woman named Um Raed Abu Elyan, whilst speaking to a journalist from The Guardian. Israel believes defeating Hamas is a necessity to ensure terrorists never dare to butcher innocent Jews again.
