Torrential rainfall in Norway has caused rivers to overflow their banks with one waterway sweeping away more than 100 sheep, police said on September 16. More and Romsdal regional police wrote on Twitter, "Firefighters and police are now trying to rescue stranded sheep." It added that currently there are reports of more than 100 sheep carried off by the water from the river Surna some 80 kilometers southwest of the city of Trondheim.

'Never experienced anything like this before'
The sheep farmer Harald Kragnes told a local newspaper that he has never experienced anything like this before. He said he had 107 sheep at pasture when the flood struck and had lost about half of them. He also said that he witnessed many dead sheep floating down the overflowing river. The floods in central Norway after a weekend of heavy rain and winds have claimed no loss of human life. According to sources, around 25 houses and a retirement home have been cut off due to rising water levels in the nearby municipality of Krokstadora.

Authorities say
The farmer said that he heard his neighbours also complaining about the loss of over 50 cattle from the pasture land. While many sheep were lost and feared dead, some of them were believed to have been left stranded on islands along the river. The authorities said that the water level of the river is expected to plummet down by Monday morning and the chances of saving the stranded sheep were greater. A police officer told a news organisation that the forces of nature are also coordinating them to rescue the stranded sheep.
