A police and army raid on the Yangon headquarters of Myanmar's deposed ruling party on Monday ended with security forces being unable to gain access to the building.

As the task force drove away, a large crowd of protesters who had gathered to watch the operation from behind police barricades cheered and sang songs in celebration.

A group of lawmakers from the National League for Democracy, as well as staff members, were inside the building.

According to local media reports, they declined to open the doors because they said it was a crime scene.

The headquarters was raided by the army last week and computers and documents were removed.

Earlier Monday, Myanmar's military leaders extended their detention of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose remand was set to expire and whose freedom is a key demand of the crowds of people continuing to protest the Feb. 1 coup.
