Myanmar workers in Seoul protest against army takeover

A group of Myanmar workers in Seoul protested on Tuesday against Myanmar's new military rulers and urged them to release members of the nation's democratically-elected government.

The protesters held signs and chanted slogans including "we want democracy" near the Myanmar military attache's office in the South Korean capital.

They had been expressing their opposition to the February 1 coup, in which Myanmar's military seized power and detained leaders, including the Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

The military has accused the government's leaders of the election fraud - though the country's election commission has dismissed the claim.

Speaking at the demonstration, protest organiser Soe Moe Thu called on the military to "respect" the results of the country's election in November.

He then labelled the military coup an "act of treason."

On Monday, Myanmar's new military rulers issued decrees that effectively banned peaceful public protests in the country's two biggest cities.
