Narayan Debnath, creator of iconic Bengali Comics passes away; CM Mamata pays tribute

Cartoonist Narayan Debnath, creator of iconic Bengali Comics, passed away in Kolkata. Tributes poured in from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee & others.

Acclaimed cartoonist Narayan Debnath, kwn for his creation of iconic Bengali comics, passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday. He was 97. He died of -related illness at 10.15 AM. 

artist h been hospitalised on December 24, and h been on treatment since n.   news was confirmed by hospital treating him, Bellevue Hospital.

Acclaimed cartoonist Narayan Debanth passes away

Narayan Debnath, as per a report on PTI, was on ventilator support over past few days.

Debanth was kwn for creating comic characters like Bantul Great, Handa Bhonda and nte Phonte.

He reportedly held a record for Handa Bhonda as it became longest-running comic. comic was in circulation for 53 years.

He h won numerous hours in his illustrious career. Among m was Sahitya Akemi award. He was felicitated with Pma Shri in 2021.

West Bengal CM pay tribute to Narayan Debnath 

Among those to pen tributes to him were West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

She tweeted, "Extremely s that  ted litterateur, illustrator, cartoonist, and creator of some immortal characters for children's world, Narayan Debnath is more. He h created Bantul Great,  Handa- Bhonda, nte- Fonte, figures that  have been etched in our hearts for deces.

He h also been felicitated by Bengal's highest hour Banga Bishuhan in 2013 and leer mentioned it too. 

"We were proud to bestow upon him Bengal’s highest award Banga Bibhusan in 2013. His passing away is certainly an immeasurable loss to world of literary creativity and comics. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, reers and countless fans and followers," she ded.

Goverr of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankar tweeted a video of his visit to Debnath in December 2021. 

"S at demise of Pma Shri #NarayanDebnath legendary cartoonist and creator of immortal characters Bantul Great,  Handa- Bhonda, nte- Fonte for children's world. Huge loss to world of literary creativity and comics. My thoughts are with his family, friends and fans," he ded.

At time of his visit, he h written, "Feeling inspired and energised after being blessed by Pma Shri Shri Narayan Debnath- creator of Handa Bhonda; Batul Great and nte Phonte at his residence in Howrah. At 96, found him very alert."
