Native Americans run Las Vegas ' only cannabis lounge in NuWu

NuWu Cannabis Marketplace is a glass-walled, big-box structure that as per comparisons in reports resembles a car dealership that started in Lad Vegas in 2017. NuWu meaning “the people” in the Southern Paiute is situated on a tribe’s colony which is one mile away from the neon-lit Fremont Street Experience. The Tudinu, or “desert people”, from whom the Las Vegas Paiute descend, have lived in southern Nevada for more than 1,000 years. Gradually n 1970, the Las Vegas Paiutes who worked as helping hands became recognized as a sovereign nation, after which they launched several businesses.

NuWu opens the first cannabis tasting room in Las Vegas

In October, NuWu became the go-to dispensary for many in Las Vegas as it opened Nevada’s first cannabis tasting room in October. It is their sovereignty that exempts them from a law that restricts marijuana consumption to private residences until 1 July 2021. Its 112,000-sq-ft marijuana superstore near the Las Vegas Strip has a cafe and a restaurant, 'Planet 13' which is a huge dispensary of the drug. Until their sovereignty lasts, this 55-member Southern Paiute band has the pot lounge business all to itself.

Federal assistance inadequate, cannabis bar gives hope: Tribe

Tso, a member of the tribe said in a media interview that the Government had provided federal assistance for healthcare, education and law enforcement services but it has dwindled since the recession. It is also quite evident In a report by the US Commission on Civil Rights titled “Broken Promises” called the funding status for Indian country “grossly inadequate”. Speaking on the status of treaties between the US government and the tribes, Tso said that there are 560 some odd treaties between the US government and tribes, and none of them have been honoured. He and his tribe members hope that their current business will balance out some of those shortfalls.
