Wreckage of a Nazi Germany warship from World War II-era has been found off the coast of Norway by engineers while doing an inspection.

Wreck of a Nazi Germany warship from World War II-era has been found off coast of rway by engineers while doing an inspection. light cruiser named Karlsruhe was sunk after two torpedoes fired from British submarine HMS Truant hit ship and shut off engines and electricity generators. wreck was discovered during a sonar survey in 2017, however, it was only in September this year that it was identified after an investigation was carried out by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and multi-beam echo sounders.

'Most exciting find'

ship was sunk in 1940 and wreck was lying upright on seafloor at a depth of about 490 metres near off rwegian coast. wreck of ship was discovered by engineers of Statnett, a rwegian state-owned power company. engineers were out in sea inspecting stem grid cables at seabed when y discovered wreck but couldn't inspect it n because of lack of time. company this year sent an expedition team with survey vessel Olympic Taurus and confirmed that wreck was Karlsruhe. One of engineers involved in mission said that y have found many historical remains in past but this was easily most exciting find.

"You can find Karlsruhe's fate in history books, but one has kwn exactly where ship sunk. Moreover, it was only large German warship that was lost during attack on rway with an unkwn position. After all se years we finally kw where graveyard to this important warship is," said Frode Kvalø, archaeologist and researcher at rwegian Maritime Museum.

With a length of 174 meters (571 ft) and equipped with steam turbines and nine canns, Karlsruhe led German attack on Kristiansand during Operation Weserübung April 9, 1940. But very same afteron British submarine Truant attacked Karlsruhe and hit cruiser with a torpedo, leaving it significantly damd. It was n sunk by order from German Captain, who after taking his crew off ship asked m to fire two more torpedoes to make sure it sank.
