COVID-19: New York postpones St. Patrick’s Day Parade for first time in 258 years

New York City postponed its St. Patrick's Day Parade, which draws around 250,000 marchers and more than a million spectators to Manhattan, due to coronavirus.

In wake of coronavirus crisis, New York City postponed its St. Patrick's Day Pare which draws around 250,000 marchers and more than a million spectators to Manhattan. New York Goverr Andrew Cuomo anunced that Celebration Committee has agreed to postpone 2020 St. Patrick's Day Pare which is tritionally held on March 17.

One of largest recurring public events of New York has been postponed for first time in 258 years after World Health Organisation (WHO) declared vel coronavirus as a pandemic. New York state has confirmed 216 positive cases with only NYC reporting 52 cases of COVID-19.

“Today I h several conversations with organizers of St. Patrick's Day Pare to determine wher pare should move forward in light of evolving coronavirus situation and increased case count in New York City area,” said Goverr Cuomo in a statement.

“Following those conversations, I recommended and pare's leership agreed to postpone this year's pare due to high density and large volume of marchers and spectators who attend,” he ded.

'Risk remains low'

Cuomo applauded pare's leership for working cooperatively saying it was t an easy decision for pare organisers. He pointed towards recommendation of public health experts to highlight importance of limiting large garings and close contacts to contain spre of virus.

“While risk to New Yorkers remains low and we want to avoid social and ecomic disruptions, we have an obligation to take action to contain spre of this virus,” said Goverr.

At a press briefing, Cuomo anunced New York State will give contracts to 28 private labs to increase testing capacity for COVID-19. He also anunced all state workers under quarantine or isolation due to pandemic will be guaranteed two full weeks of paid leave. Goverr has alrey declared a state of emergency in New York.
