“Revolution in Astromy”
Michel Mayor, born in 1942 in Lausanne, Switzerland, received coveted prize “for discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar- star”. According to bel Prize foundation, discovery by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz started a revolution in astromy and over 4,000 exoplanets have since been found in Milky Way.
“Strange new worlds are still being discovered, with an incredible wealth of sizes, forms and orbits,” wrote Foundation.

Discovery of exoplanet
Mayor, professor at University of Geneva, contributed to first discovery of a planet outside our solar system, an exoplanet, orbiting a solar- star, 51 Pegasi. exoplanet moves rapidly around its star and takes four days to complete its orbit. After discovery, two American astromers were able to confirm it using ir telescope.
“This year’s Laureates have transformed our ideas about cosmos. ir discoveries have forever changed our conceptions of world,” said Swedish Acemy.
