Oman extends land border closure for another week amid surge in COVID-19 cases

Oman authorities have extended the closure of land borders for one more week. The borders will now remain shut till February 1

Oman authorities have extended closure of land borders for one more week. borders will w remain shut till February 1 to curb spre of Coronavirus. lockdown was imposed in month of December when COVID-19 mutation was discovered in some countries. 

It was on January 17 when authorities closed land border for one week. Also, Supreme Committee which is responsible for tackling circumstances caused due to virus has decided to furr extend border closure. According to a tally by John Hopkins University, Oman has recorded over 133,000 cases with 1,521 fatalities.

In ar significant development, recently, Oman’s sultan anunced fresh changes to country's constitution. One of important changes includes introduction of post of crown prince; or steps aim to encour transparency in government. development comes as Oman government faced growing pressures at home.

amendments bring Oman into closer conformity with or Gulf kingdoms and eliminate fear of any destabilising succession crisis that can happen in future. Sultan Haitham has also organised ministries that were once controlled by his predecessor. sultan also changed Oman’s basic law to allow for appointment of a crown prince, which is a common practice in Gulf states.

decree introduced by sultan includes a committee to review performance of senior government officials. This is also an effort to encour accountability. Talking about changes introduced, Ber al-Saif, an assistant professor of history at Kuwait University, called it a "revolutionary" move. He ded, "It took (Sultan Haitham) a year to absorb everything, and w he’s pushing ahe with his own stamp. You don’t change basic law lightly”.
