In a sensational development that sees even Pakistan's staunchest defender and all-weather friend acquiescing with the increasingly-held global view of Pakistan being a sponsor and exporter of terrorism, China has asked Pakistan to explore ways to relocate Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief and 26/11 attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed to a West Asian country.

As per Pakistani PMO sources, China's President Xi Jinping suggested as much to Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Abbasi in April in a meeting on the sidelines of the BOAO forum. As per sources, 10 minutes of the 35 that were spent in the meeting were devoted to discussions around Hafiz Saeed.

The move, if it comes to be, will allow Hafiz Saeed, a globally designated terrorist, to live 'a quiet life' in a West Asian country.

China's move comes in response to mounting international pressure to act against him for his links to terrorism and terror groups. On numerous earlier occasions, China has stood steadfastly behind Pakistan, often vetoing others moves to crack down on terrorism.

Accordingly, as per sources, the Chinese President was keen on pressing the Pakistan Prime Minister to find an early solution to keep Saeed away from the limelight.

In response, Pak PM Abbasi is said to have consulted with the government's legal team in a series of meeting, the last of which was held on Wednesday. The issue has also been raised before the country's National Security Committee (NSC) and is likely to be referred to the nect government for the earliest possible solution. General elections are to be held in Pakistan next month.

Incidentally, the same National Security Committee had recently dismissed Pakistan's former PM Nawaz Sharif's admission that Pakistan had sent terrorists to India for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Speaking to the Dawn newspaper (which has since faced a clamp-down), Sharif had said:

"Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can't we complete the trial?"
