Pakistan's Punjab province has me teaching of Quran with translation mandatory for all university students, without which gruating students will t get degree. Punjab province Goverr Chaudhry Mohamm Sarwar issued tification on Sunday making it mandatory for all students in universities (except n-Muslims) to learn Quran with Urdu translation.

'Compulsory subject in universities of Punjab'

"University gruates will t be awarded degree if y do t study Quran with translation,” tification says. It furr says, "Lecturers in all universities -- public and private -- of Punjab will teach Quran with translation to all students. holy book will be taught separately from subject of Islamic studies which is alrey being taught in all universities.

Goverr Sarwar, who is also Chancellor of universities in Punjab, said government has me mandatory for all university students to re Quran with translation, failing for which will deprive m of ir degree.

" historical decision to teach Quran with Urdu translation has been implemented. This will be a compulsory subject in universities of Punjab without which a degree won’t be awarded,” he said. Sarwar said re is a plan to bring amendments to Constitution for making teaching of Quran translation compulsory for all students.

In April, he h formed a seven-member committee of Vice-Chancellors to submit recommendations on how to make teaching of Quran with translation compulsory in all provincial universities. Mirities in Muslim-majority Pakistan make up less than 5% of country's total population.
