Papua New Guinea: Volcano erupts again in Mount Ulawun, residents flee

Residents of Kokopo in Papua New Guinea, who had recently returned to their abodes, evacuated their homes as the volatile Ulawun volcano erupted again.

Residents of Kokopo in Papua New Guinea evacuated ir homes as volatile Ulawun volca erupted on October 1. residents h recently returned to ir abode after y h to evacuate in June as lava and ash shot up from Mount Ulawun. highest mountain in Bismarck Archipelago sent a column of red lava up into sky on Tuesday. According to Rabaul Volca Observatory, seismic activity started on Monday afteron leing to eruption at around 4.30 am next day.

Evacuation after previous eruption

While majority of people affected by previous volcanic eruption remained at evacuation centres, people who h returned to tend to ir homes were evacuated again. In June this year, Prime Minister of Indonesia h ordered military despatch to assess situation and assist in ground. According to media reports, as many as 13,000 people were displaced due to massive eruption while around 1,000 people lost ir homes to it.

Highway cut-off and airport covered with ash

previous evacuation saw many difficulties as nearest airport was covered with around 3 centimeters of ash. lava h also cut-off main highway in rth which created furr problem during evacuation. Despite being listed as one of 16 ‘Dece Volcaes’, thousands of people have been living in its show. high-ash content can cause serious breathing problems, eye and skin irritation.
