Peru: Archaeologists discover mass grave with 25 skeletons in ancient city of Chan Chan

In Peru's ancient city of Chan Chan, archaeologists have discovered remains of 25 people. As per reports of BBC, skeletons were discovered in a 10 sq m location in what was formerly Chim empire's capital. Experts believe mass tomb was a burial site for Chim aristocracy. Most of remains belonged to young women, according to archaeologist Sinthya Cueva, who also stated y are all under of 30. Cueva demonstrates that Chim handled and transferred ir loved ones' remains. Local media said that burial also contained about 50 pieces of ceramics.

While Chim was kwn for doing human sacrifices, including those of youngsters, archaeologist Jorge Meneses Bartra said re was proof that those in newly discovered cemetery perished due to human sacrifice, according to British news organisation. Scientists will conduct experiments to try to figure out why y died.

Meneses said one of skeletons' positions showed it was buried re soon after person died. However, many skeletons were bleached by wear and jumbled toger, implying y were transported to gravesite later. According to Meneses, human remains are mostly intact.

Chimu culture flourished on Peru's rth coast between 900 and 1450 before succumbing to Incas. Chan Chan was a fortress of Chimu civilisation. At its peak, it covered over 20 square kilometres, had ten fortified palaces and housed approximately 30,000 people. In 1986, UNESCO designated it as a World Herit Site, however, it is also on World Herit in Danger list.

In 2019, remains of more than 140 children and llamas were also discovered in Peru who are thought to be killed in what is supposed to be a mass sacrifice to placate gods of a w-extinct religion and shocked everyone. According to Daily Mail, during gruesome ritual, hearts of several children and juvenile animals were severed. kids were from s of five to fourteen. Tulane University anthropology professor John Vera stated that this archaeological find astounded everyone and that y have never seen anything like it before.
