Privacy rights may become next victim of coronavirus, fear activists

Digital surveillance in the wake of a pandemic has raised concerns over privacy and rights activists believe that it could be the next victim of coronavirus.

As number of coronavirus cases around world continues to rise exponentially, government authorities have heightened surveillance mechanism to keep a track of outbreak. Digital surveillance in wake of coronavirus pandemic has raised concerns over privacy and rights activists believe that it could be next victim of coronavirus.

“Governments around world are demanding extraordinary new surveillance powers intended to contain virus’ spre,” said Electronic Frontier Foundation in a blog post.

San Franciso-based n-profit digital rights group said that such extraordinary powers would inve privacy and deter free speech. It demanded governments show that use of such powers would be proportionate and based on science to combat ongoing crisis. It opposed use of some of techlogies for surveillance calling it extremely invasive and dangerous.

“If public grants such powers to government, se powers must expire when crisis ends, contain strict anti-bias rules, and be subject to strict safeguards and audits,” group said.

Demands transparency

rights group has also demanded greater transparency in functioning and decision-making process of government. It said that governments must brocast proceedings if y have closed physical s as a part of social distancing measures during coronavirus outbreak.

“While governmental responses to public records requests may be slowed down during this public health crisis, outbreak is excuse to shut m down altoger,” said EEF.

Over 7.8 lakh confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported till date and nearly 38,000 deaths worldwide have forced government around world to take stringent action in order to contain spre of virus. While United States has reported most number of cases, Italy is worst-hit in terms of death toll with around 11,591 deaths reported so far.
