Pro-democracy activists rally in Hong Kong

 Hong Kong Civil Human Rights Front, the pro-democracy political group that organised major protests in Hong Kong in 2019, replaced the annual New Year's Day march with a van protest, driving through the city to call for the release of jailed protestors. The organisation drove a van with loud speakers around Lai Chi Kok Detention centre, where numerous jailed protesters are serving their sentencing, and shouted slogans like "free political prisoners". The van then headed off to Kowloon and reached the Hong Kong Legislative Council as their end point.

"We decided to organise this mobile protest station and to drive all around Hong Kong to advocate our five demands," said Eric Lai, vice-convener of the Civil Human Rights Front.Last year's New Year's Day, more than a million people joined the Civil Human Rights Front protest, demanding democratic elections for Hong Kong's leader and legislature and a probe of police behaviour during the months of sustained protests in 2019.
