Ethiopia: Kidnapping of students sparks anti-government protests

Following the kidnapping of a group of University students in Ethiopia, several thousand students took to the streets in cities against government inaction.

Following kidnapping of a group of University students, several thousand students took to streets in Ethiopian cities. protestors were demanding that country's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed take a strong stance against ongoing ethnic violence in country.

Anti-government protests

university students were abducted from Dembi Dollo University by armed men. university is present in Oromiya region and kidnapping took place in early December last year. Just earlier this week, government anunced that it h rescued 21 students who h previously been kidnapped but whereabouts of 12 students still remained unkwn.

bel Peace Laureate and a member of Oromo ethnic group, Abiy is under great pressure as se recent kidnappings have revived widespre fears about ethnic violence at a time when country is gearing up for an election. 

Majority of students that were kidnapped belonged to Amhara, a group that has clashed with Oromos in past. According to statistics released by higher education ministry, 35,000 students have opted to drop out of university fearing growing violence. At least 12 students have been killed.

According to reports, Prime Minister and or government officials met with family of abducted students and family members were given assurances that students would be safe. movement has begun using hashtag #BringBackOurStudents and has been used by several thousand people who are taking part in marches.
