Rare sighting of grey whale in Bay of Naples

A large grey whale has been spotted over the weekend by a group of divers in the bay of Naples, southern Italy.

animal, t usually seen in Mediterranean, was seen Sunday and seemed lost initially, according to one of divers.

But after playing with bow of boat, whale resumed its course towards open sea.

Walter Esposito, President and Technical Director of Fipsas (Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities) Federal Divers Group of Naples, told Associated Press that y could t believe what y were seeing.

He said y never expected to see that kind of whale on ir doorstep.

A similar whale - perhaps same one - was spotted off island of Ponza about halfway between Rome and Naples on April 15.

According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (AA), grey whales swim in rth Pacific Ocean and migrate down Pacific coast to sourn California and coast of Mexico.

It is t clear how whale got to Mediterranean but according to AA website, grey whales can swim long distances in deep water during migration.
