''Religious Extremism Effectively Contained'' Says Xinjiang Governor Shohrat Zakir

Chairman of Government of Xinjiang Uygur Automous Region, Shohrat Zakir, claimed that Chinese government's policies in region have led to containment of religious extremism, has brought peace and led to ecomic growth in Xinjiang.
Speaking to Xinhua, Zakir, while talking about counter-terrorism and vocational education and training program initiated by Chinese government in region, also claimed that government created policies for region as a response to United Nations General Assembly's resolution on Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, which entails "dressing conditions conducive to spre of terrorism, while preventing and combating terrorism".

Furrmore, Zakir highlighted that only people who have been "instigated, coerced, or lured into terrorist or extremist activities, or people who only committed mir offenses when involved in terrorist and extremist activities" are me to go through vocational training at "vocational education institutions".

An agreement is signed with trainees, following which free programs are conducted. Certificates of completion are issued after said trainees meet required standards. program aim at making trainees employable, according to chairman. program entails "learning country's common langu, legal kwledge, vocational skills, along with de-extermination education."
Zakir quoted trainees while explaining that centers help in giving m a new perspective and a basic pay that makes m realize "that life can be so colorful". He also described amenities provided at institutions at length, while outlining China's efforts in stabilizing Xinjiang.

He furr said, "In past 21 months, violent terrorist attacks have occurred and number of criminal cases, including those endangering public security, has dropped significantly."

Zakir also highlighted four prefectures in Sourn Xinjiang and stated that region has a long way to go in ericating terrorism. Some residents re have a limited command of country's common langu and a limited sense and kwledge of law. y often have difficulties in finding employment due to limited vocational skills. Zakir resolutely believes that se policies are a step in right direction. "We have laid a good foundation for completely solving deeply-rooted problems that affect region's long-term stability," he exclaimed during interview with Xinhua.

In 2009, ethnic riots that broke out here resulted in hundreds of deaths, and some rical Uighurs h carried out terrorist attacks in recent years. Chinese officials have claimed that in order to suppress threat of Uighur separatism and extremism, government needs to crack down t only on those Uighurs who show signs of having been ricalized but on a significant swath of population.
