Russia: 83-years-old postwoman still works the same mountain route

The oldest postal worker in Russia, 83-year-old Ekaterina Dzalaeva has been walking the same mountain route she has been working for over the last 50 years.

The oldest postal worker in Russia has been walking the same route she has been working for over the last 50 years. The eighty-three-year-old Russian worker has walked the same mountain route in the Caucasus Republic of North Ossetia which is a federal subject of Russia. The eighty-three-year-old Ekaterina Dzalaeva delivers mail between the districts of Mizur, Buron and Tsei.

Dzalaeva postal route covered a round trip distance of approximately 40 km

Dzalaeva postal route covered a round trip distance of approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles). Dzalaeva would cover her postal delivery route completely on foot and she did this six days a week. In recent times, Dzalaeva states that now she frequently gets lifts from passing cars to her destination and does not walk as far as she previously would. 

The oldest postal woman in Russia adds that she finds it easier when she is walking. She states she finds it easier as when she walks she chats and interacts with people. Ekaterina Dzalaeva further adds that she was inspired when she was a child by a local postman who brought the news from the front during World War 2.

Ekaterina as a child had always envisioned to become a postwoman

When Ekaterina as a child had always envisioned that when she would grow up, she was certain to become a postwoman. She said that as a child she dreamt of becoming a postwoman as there would be people waiting for her to come and that they would love her, she added. The Russian postwoman took a decision to give up school around the year 1958 as there was no one to look after the land and cut the hay. In between taking care and tending the land, Dzalaeva missed the admission period for her local school. As destiny would have it, it was during this period that the young Dzalaeva discovered that was no postman at the post office and asked the manager to employ her. Dzalaeva states that the manager asked her if she could work. To which she said that she would do her best to. Ekaterina Dzalaeva further stated that she did not imagine then that she would be still at the same job 50 years later.
