Kyiv: Ukraine on Thursday claimed that Russia had launched an intercontinental ballistic missile overnight targeting Dnipro city in the central-east of the country, the first time Moscow has used such a missile in the war.

It wasn't clear exactly what type of missile was fired, but Ukraine's air force said in a statement on Telegram on Thursday that it was launched from Russia's Astrakhan region.

Russia Intercepts Storm Shadow Missiles

The development comes as the war has increasingly gained an international dimension, with North Korean troops now arriving to assist Russia on the battlefield.

Ukraine also stated that it had fired British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles deep into Russian territory.

This is the first time Ukraine has used these long-range missiles outside its own borders, as the UK had only permitted Ukraine to use them on its own soil. Russia had earlier called Ukraine’s attacks with US missiles an act of foreign interference and warned that Russia would respond, considering it the start of a “new phase of war.”

The 'Storm Shadow' missiles were originally supplied by the UK with restrictions on their use—limited to Ukrainian soil only.

However, this policy appears to have shifted in response to Russia’s increasing reliance on unconventional strategies, including the deployment of North Korean troops in the Kursk region to support its military operations. Western officials have strongly criticized Moscow for these tactics.

US Shuts Down Embassy In Kyiv

The US Embassy in Kyiv has temporarily closed its operations, citing information about a potential major air attack on Wednesday, November 20.

The embassy announced the decision on its official X account, formerly known as Twitter, and urged US citizens in Ukraine to remain alert and prepare to shelter if an air alert is sounded.

In a statement shared on its website, the embassy stated, "Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy will be closed, and employees are being instructed to shelter in place." The precautionary measure reflects heightened concerns following recent developments in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Nuclear Threats on the Rise

On Tuesday, President Putin announced changes to Russia's nuclear policy, lowering the threshold for a nuclear response to conventional attacks. The adjustment highlights growing risks as relations between Russia and Western nations hit their lowest point in decades.

US Missiles and Escalation

Just days before the British missiles were reportedly fired, Ukraine had used U.S.-made long-range weapons to strike Russian positions in the Kursk region. These attacks followed President Joe Biden 's decision to approve Ukraine’s use of the ATACMS system. While these U.S.-approved strikes were limited to the Kursk region, they underscored the evolving nature of the conflict.
