Russia names ‘world’s first’ COVID-19 vaccine after first Earth satellite ‘Sputnik’

Russia has named its new COVID-19 vaccine after Sputnik, the first artificial Earth satellite launched by the erstwhile Soviet Union on October 4, 1957.

Russia has named its new COVID-19 vaccine after Sputnik, first artificial Earth satellite launched by erstwhile Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. During a meeting via video link, President Vlimir Putin anunced on August 11 that health ministry has approved world’s first coronavirus vaccine.

world’s first clinically approved vaccine against vel coronavirus has been manufactured by Gamaleya Research Institute in collaboration with Russian Health Ministry. Putin said that his daughter has alrey received vaccination, ding that she h a mild temperature after she was vaccinated but it quickly went away.

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told meeting that it is one of first registered vaccines in world to prove its effectiveness and safety. He said that vaccine will be produced at two sites - Gamaleya Center of Russian Health Ministry and Binpharm. Murashko ded 20 countries have pre-ordered a billion doses of new coronavirus vaccine.

“ vaccine is registered under conditions in accordance with procedure for market access opted by Government of Russian Federation for drugs intended for prevention of COVID-19,” said Murashko.

Industrial production in September

Tatyana Golikova, Deputy Prime Minister for social policy, said that industrial production of new coronavirus vaccine will start in September. She said that medical professional will be first one to get vaccinated and government will furr work on proposals and present Putin with a strategy by end of 2020.

Russia has become first country to register a coronavirus vaccine, however, questions have been raised over decision to register it vaccine before Phase 3 trials which last for months. Last week, experts h claimed that potential vaccine would clear conditional registration this month. Officials h anunced that vaccine would be rey to be ministered to civilians within three to four days of procedure completion.
