Ukraine's military on Monday reported 80 ceasefire violations by Russian-aligned forces in the space of 24 hours along their shared border area amid ongoing fears of an invasion by Moscow.

The Ukrainian Joint Forces of Operation (JFO) said one soldier had been injured by the shelling on Sunday which was in violation of the Minsk agreement.

"The occupation forces continue to cowardly shell positions of Ukrainian defenders from behind the civilian settlements, hiding behind civilians as behind a human shield," the representative of JFO spokesperson Pavlo Kovalchyuk said. The JFO added there had been 94 instances of shelling on civilian settlements in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions over the previous five days, injuring two people as well as damaging 44 homes and four schools.

Ukrainian forces have been fighting the pro-Russia rebels in the country's east since 2014 in a conflict that has killed some 14,000 people. Violations of a 2015 ceasefire agreement, including shelling and shooting along the line of contact, have been common.

Russia on Sunday rescinded earlier pledges to pull tens of thousands of its troops back from Ukraine's northern border, a move that U.S. leaders said put Russia another step closer to what they said was the planned invasion of Ukraine.
