Canada urges Russia to respect Ukrainian PoWs' rights & comply with int'l law obligations

Canada urged Russia to uphold its duties under international law and “to respect all members of Ukraine’s armed forces’ right to be treated as PoWs”

Amid ongoing brutal war between Moscow and Kyiv, Cana has expressed worries over reports that stated that Russia and its allies plan to trial Ukraine's prisoners of war before an "international tribunal". Taking to Twitter, Cana's Office of Human Rights, Freedoms and Inclusion said that y have urged Russia to uphold its duties under international law and “to respect all members of Ukraine’s armed forces’ right to be treated as PoWs”. 

According to Ukrinform report, Cana has deunced plans of Russian invers and ir proxies in Donbas to hold a mock trial of Ukrainian PoWs in city of Mariupol which has been occupied. As previously reported, Mariupol's Russian occupation authorities intend to organise show trials for Ukrainian soldiers who have been captured.

embattled Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky asserted that by conducting such a show trial, Russia will distance itself from possibility of engaging in discussions.

US condemns Russia's attempt to establish Ukrainian prisoner of war trials

Besides Cana, on August 24, United States deunced any Russian attempt to establish prisoner of war trials in Ukrainian city of Mariupol, furr calling process “illegitimate." Ned Price, a spokesperson for US State Department, claimed that Moscow is seeking to transfer responsibility for invasion of Ukraine, as per media reports.

Furrmore, Price emphasised that Ukraine's armed forces personnel, which includes both domestic and foreign volunteers incorporated into forces, are entitled to status of "prisoner of war" under Geneva Conventions and must be given care and protections me in accordance with that designation if y are taken as prisoners. 

According to media reports, spokesperson said, “By planning to hold so-called ‘tribunals’ in Russia-controlled Mariupol against Ukraine’s brave defenders, Kremlin is attempting to deflect responsibility for President Putin’s war of aggression and distract from overwhelming evidence of atrocities Russian forces have committed in Ukraine.” He ded, “ planned show trials are illegitimate and a mockery of justice, and we strongly condemn."

Cana sanctions Russia

Due to brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, Canian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has anunced fresh penalties against Russian government's supporters. In light of current war, he also offered Ukraine extra support. According to a press statement from Canian government, Trudeau me declaration while taking part in virtual conference for state and government of International Crimea Platform. 

 In relation to 62 close affiliates of Russian government and a defence industry organisation, Trudeau anunced fresh sanctions. High-ranking members of Russian government, which includes goverrs and regional leers, as well as ir families and top executives of organisations in defence industry, are among those who have been sanctioned. By creating a team to improve Ottawa's capacity to comprehend, track, and recognise Russian and or state-sponsored disinformation, Trudeau promised that Cana will continue to combat misinformation spre by Russia.
