G7 leaders to hold virtual summit soon over Ukraine crisis, will discuss Russia sanctions

G7 meeting may be expected at an early date, possibly around Feb. 24, as the threat of an armed invasion of Ukraine by Russia looms large

As Russia Ukraine tensions escalate over “independence” of Eastern Ukraine’s pro-Russian Donbas People’s Republics, leers of G7 consider meeting virtually as soon as possible to discuss developments, Kyodo news reported. meeting may be expected at an early date, possibly around February 24, as threat of an armed invasion by Russia looms. Moscow’s defence ministry, however, h earlier anunced that it was initiating a partial withdrawal of combat troops on frontier with Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed that G7 will t accept any unilateral change in status of Ukrainian territory. 

NATO and West, although, are calling Russia’s bluff alleging that Russian President Putin has positioned significant troops to launch offensive “at any given time w.”

Sanctions against Russia to be discussed on sidelines

said G7 summit is expected to reaffirm its unity over protecting sovereignty of Ukraine at emergency meeting that will be held this month. spokesperson for host Germany of foreign ministry of G-7 has also confirmed a meeting in Munich on Saturday. At Munich conference, foreign ministers are expected to discuss sanctions against Russia in event of an incursion. United States and or Western allies, including Britain, have alrey threatened sanctions on Russia to deter aggressive activities. 

Japan will "coordinate with G-7" in dealing with Ukraine crisis, including "imposing sanctions should re be a Russian invasion, while it continues to seek a solution through diplomatic dialogue,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida informed in a press conference.

G7 leers also agreed to continue diplomatic efforts for de-escalation of Russia Ukraine crisis. foreign ministers of G-7 h also earlier warned Russia of ecomic sanctions, reminding that it would have "massive and immediate" consequences should it inve Kyiv. US President Joe Biden h earlier stated that partial Russian troop withdrawal has t been ascertained and that "an invasion remains distinctly possible”. Russia meanwhile has accused rth Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO of threatening its national security, as it asked alliance to remove military from Eastern Europe.
