UN: Humanitarian law 'tossed aside' in Russia Ukraine war
UN human rights chief says that international humanitarian law appears to have been “tossed aside” in Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Geneva-based human rights office said in a statement Friday that “Russian armed forces have indiscriminately shelled and bombed populated areas, killing civilians and wrecking hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure — actions that may amount to war crimes.”
The office said its mission in Ukraine so far has verified 5,264 civilian casualties, including 2,345 deaths, since the war began on Feb. 24. It said that 92.3% of those were recorded in Ukrainian government-controlled territory.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet added that “the actual numbers are going to be much higher as the horrors inflicted in these areas of intense fighting such as Mariupol come to light.” She said that “over these eight weeks, international humanitarian law has not merely been ignored but seemingly tossed aside.”

UK will replace Poland's Soviet-era T-72 tanks supplied to Ukraine
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK is looking at sending tanks to Poland to replace the Soviet-era T-72 tanks the Poles are shipping to Ukraine. Johnson made the comments Friday during a news conference in New Delhi, where he held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I think perhaps what I haven’t said publicly before is we’re also looking more at what we can do to backfill in countries such as Poland who may want to send heavier weaponry to help defend the Ukrainians,” Johnson said. “So we’re looking at sending tanks to Poland to help them as they sending some of their T-72s to Ukraine.”

Russia accuses West of ‘stuffing’ Ukraine with heavy armament
Russia's embassy in Iceland has accused Western states of continuing to actively "stuff" Ukraine with heavy armament. "The volume of military equipment already delivered or ready to dispatch to the country exceeds dozens and hundreds units. Among them are howitzers, armored personnel carriers, helicopters, drones, etc," the Russian embassy said.
Among the countries that actively support "the Ukrainian neo-nazis with weapons" are the UK, Canada, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and others, Russian embassy claimed, singling out Peter Stano, an EU spokesperson for external affairs.
"Unfortunately, we have to state that Iceland also ‘contributes’ to ensuring the military supplies to Ukraine and thereby to prolonging the Ukrainian crisis. Iceland has organised 13 flights to transport military equipment. We hope that the Icelandic authorities are aware of responsibility for the negative consequences of such actions.
We would like to draw your attention that Russia reserves the right to consider foreign military cargo and equipment on the territory Ukraine as a legitimate target.
At the same time, we would like to point out that the ‘pumping’ of the Kyiv regime with weapons will not lead to the results pursued by the West. The goals of the special military operation to demilitarise and denazify Ukraine set by the Russian authorities will definitely be achieved."

Ukrainian troops still contesting southern city of Mariupol: Pentagon
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby says assessments show Ukrainian troops are still contesting the southern city of Mariupol despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claim of victory in the battle for the city in Ukraine’s industrial heartland, home to coal mines, metal plants and heavy-equipment factories.
Putin on Thursday ordered his troops not to storm a giant Mariupol steel mill where an estimated 2,000 Ukrainians remain holed up but to seal it off — in an apparent bid to free up his troops for the broader campaign in the east.
Kirby said it was “unclear” why Putin did that and Putin’s words need to be viewed with skepticism.
“They made this big show yesterday of him saying he wasn’t gonna go into that plant and try to eradicate the people that are there,” Kirby told CNN on Friday.
“I think we have to watch and see what the Russians actually do here. What we would tell you this morning is that we still assess that Mariupol is contested, that it hasn’t been taken by the Russians and that there’s still an active Ukrainian resistance. So they continue to fight for that city.”

UK imposes embargo on import of silver, wood products and caviar from Russia
UK Government has announced further trade sanctions against Russia – expanding the list of products facing import bans and increasing tariffs. With these new measures, the UK will now be imposing import tariffs and bans on over £1bn of Russian goods.
The new sanctions – announced today (Thursday, April 21) by International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak - will include import bans on silver, wood products and high-end products from Russia including caviar.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said: We are steadfast in our support for the people of Ukraine and these new significant sanctions against Putin will bring the total import tariffs and bans on Russian goods to over £1 billion - imposing further economic pain on Putin’s economy for his barbaric and unjustified attacks on a sovereign nation.
We will also increase tariffs by 35 percentage points on around £130m worth of products from Russia and Belarus, including diamonds and rubber.
UK has led the international sanctions effort, already increasing tariffs on goods from Russia and Belarus, banning the import of many iron and steel products as well as the export of quantum technologies, advanced materials and luxury goods and cutting off any new UK Export Finance (UKEF) support for Russia and Belarus.
International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: The UK continues to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine and is working closely with our international partners to inflict maximum damage to Putin’s regime, reducing the resources and funds he needs to carry out this illegal war.
We are taking every opportunity we can to ratchet the pressure to isolate the Russian economy and these further measures will tighten the screws, shutting down lucrative avenues of funding for Putin’s war machine.

Biden to accelerate military assistance package to Ukraine

After weeks of shelling Kyiv — Kyiv still stands. President Zelensky and his democratic-elected government still remain in power," Biden said during White House briefing.
"And the Ukrainian Armed Forces, joined by many brave Ukrainian civilians, have thwarted Russia's conquest of the country. They've been bolstered from day one by an unstinting supply of weapons, ammunition, armor, intelligence, from the nations of the free world led by us, the United States."

He told the state RTS broadcaster that the draft ”clearly indicates that the European Union does not want Serbia in its composition“ and that it’s ’’high time that Serbia also reconsiders its decision to remain on the path to EU membership.’’
Although Serbia has voted in favor of three United Nations resolutions condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine, it has refused to join Western sanctions against Moscow.

China calls for Asian unity against outsiders
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called on Asian nations to keep the future of the region in their hands and proposed a Global Security Initiative respecting the sovereignty of all countries amidst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in a veiled attack on the US’ forays into the region with the Indo-Pacific strategy.
President Xi, speaking via video link at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2022, outlined a six-point proposal for global security which broadly confirms China’s stand on Russia’s war against Ukraine to protect what Moscow states its security interests against Kyiv joining the NATO alliance.
China has declined to condemn Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine and highlighted Moscow’s concerns over NATO expansion threatening its security.
In his proposals, Xi said that countries should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, uphold non-interference in internal affairs, and respect the independent choices of development paths and social systems made by people in different countries.
“The countries should stay committed to taking the legitimate security concerns of all countries seriously, uphold the principle of indivisible security, build a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture, and oppose the pursuit of one's own security at the cost of others' security,” he said.

UN head urges for meeting with Putin, Zelenskyy
In a bid to end the Russia-led war on Ukraine and maintain peace in the war-hit zone, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy to receive him in Moscow and Kyiv. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric mentioned that both letters were sent to respective countries' UN Missions in New York on Tuesday.
The request holds relevance as the Kremlin forces waged a full-fledged war on the eastern European country on the pretext of a 'special military operation' in Ukraine. This comes after foreign ministers of both countries met in Turkey on March 10 to negotiate a ceasefire and end the conflict.
It may be noted that ongoing tension revived elements of a conflict that began eight years ago with the annexation of Crimea in 2014. So far, the military clash had caused thousands of fatalities on both sides and over five million refugees. In March, the UN refugee agency deemed the ongoing displacement as Europe's largest influx of refugees since World War II.
"In eastern Ukraine, some 1.4 million people are without access to running water, including in the besieged port city of Mariupol. Millions more have only limited access to water and electricity," a UN report stated.

Russian diplomats ramp up disinformation
The Kremlin’s diplomats are stepping up to do more online dirty work as governments and social media companies move to suppress Russia’s state media and the disinformation it spreads about the war in Ukraine.
Russian embassies and consulates are prolifically using Facebook, Twitter and other platforms to deflect blame for atrocities while seeking to undermine the international coalition supporting Ukraine.
With hundreds of social media accounts on every continent, Russia’s diplomatic corps acts as a global propaganda network, recycling and tweaking claims for each nation's audience.
Tech companies have responded by adding warning labels and removing Russia’s diplomatic accounts from its recommendations and search results. But they remain active, disseminating disinformation in nearly every nation, in part because their diplomatic status gives them an added layer of protection from moderation.
“Each week since the beginning of the war these diplomats have posted thousands of times, gaining more than a million engagements on Twitter per week,” said c who tracks more than 300 social media accounts linked to Russian embassies, consulates and diplomatic groups.
