The head of the foreign affairs committee in Russia's upper house, Konstantin Kosachev, said the U.S. lost its right to impose democracy on other countries following the storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of outgoing US President Donald Trump, Russian media reported Thursday.

Russian news channel RU-24 showed images of Trump's supporters storming the Capitol building in Washington on Wednesday.

Members of Congress were forced into hiding, offices were ransacked, and the formal congressional tally halted for more than six hours.

"Washington is affected by unrest,'' one news presenter opened her bulletin with.

Trump had encouraged his supporters to march on the Capitol to protest lawmakers’ actions, and later appeared to excuse the violent occupation by the mob, which forced its way inside and clashed with police.
